Testosterone Therapy

Testosterone therapy in dogs is typically used in cases where a dog has a hormonal imbalance, such as low testosterone levels due to age or certain medical conditions. Just like in humans, testosterone plays a key role in regulating a dog’s reproductive system, muscle mass, and overall well being.  Many dogs can benefit from this therapy including dogs that have difficulty getting up from a laying or sitting position, muscle loss, hip dysplasia, arthritis, intraveterbral disc disease or just age related decline. In male dogs, a deficiency can lead to symptoms like lethargy, loss of muscle mass, decreased sexual drive, and changes in behavior. Female dogs often benefit from testosterone therapy, but at a much lower dose. Testosterone therapy may be prescribed in such cases to help restore these levels and improve quality of life, particularly for dogs that may have undergone neutering or have other health issues affecting hormone production.

However, testosterone therapy for dogs must be carefully managed by a veterinarian, as inappropriate use or overdosage can lead to side effects such as aggression, prostate problems, or changes in coat quality. These side effects are rare in well managed patients. It’s important that pet owners work closely with their veterinarian to monitor the dog’s response to therapy and adjust treatment as needed to avoid complications. While testosterone therapy is very safe it may not be suitable for every dog, so a thorough medical assessment is essential before starting treatment.

A complete blood panel and a testosterone test are required before starting therapy.
